Fragments of the human body, its paper casts, shadows, light and blue sky photographed within Alberto Burri’s luminous Cretto in Gibellina, Sicily, encounter one another, and the body finds its place in space, through a dialogue of forms and materials. The body shapes the space, the space shapes the body, generating symbolic gestures. (Totemic forms, multiple self, shadow self – frog shapeshifter, the mask, dream space, memory…)
The project forms a puzzle-like organized entity – similar to the Cretto itself.
The micro dynamics arising from the arrangement of images, will influence the overall dynamic of the project. The playful nature of this work allows the spectator’s eye to wander, stimulating the imagination and multiple narratives.
The labyrinth like nature of the Cretto, as well as its tragic origin lend a timeless poetic quality to this land art piece. Its limited structure stimulates a desire to venture beyond one’s limits into a space of possibility.
Photography allows the crystallization of form, in a given moment – it is precisely this paradox between the metamorphic nature of the images and their fixity which when playfully arranged, further develops the notion of an identity in transformation.
